Abstract: Kate Davenport (ship) and Red Cross (ship) logbook (SAFR 16451, HDC 167) is a rough log for the KATE DAVENPORT under the command
of Captain James E. Howland for a number of voyages between New York, Oregon, Washington, China, Hawaii, Australia and California
carrying sugar, pearl shells and lumber. The log was kept by the Captain and mentions the weather, compass readings, distance,
course and the speed of other vessels in comparison with his own ship. The entry for August 24, 1883 reads: Lay in Portland
until July 1884 when I resigned command of the RED CROSS after securing a command in the employ of J.C. Ainsworth who has
three vessels in the trade between Portland and Hong Kong. The collection is available for research use without restriction.
