Sergeant Herman Nelson Krum, American Expeditionary Forces (1896-1961) was born in Liberty, New York to Clark Herman Krum
and Carrie Frances Krum. His siblings included Hannah Fay Scott née Krum, and Earl T. Krum. Sgt. Krum served with Company
L, 10th Infantry in France during the First World War. He married Elsie Doscher Ropke October 1, 1921 in Sullivan, New York.
Together they had two children, Nelson C. Krum, and Richard C. Krum.
Hannah Fay Scott née Krum (1893-1979) was born in Liberty, New York to Clark H. Krum and Carrie F. Krum. Her siblings included
Herman N. Krum and Earl T. Krum. She married Walter Scott June 10, 1918 in Middletown, New York. Together they had two children,
Warren Scott, and Jean Rudolph née Scott. Hannah was a registered nurse and retired from Ithaca Memorial Hospital in Ithaca,
New York after 35 years of service.

This collection contains 56 correspondence written by Sgt. Herman N. Krum, AEF, to his sister Hannah Fay Scott née Krum during
the First World War. This collection also contains two of Hannah's notebooks with medical course notes, poetry, list of supplies,
and other miscellaneous writings that spanned from 1912 to 1937.
Krum wrote to his sister, Hannah on January 27, 1918, from Camp Dix, New Jersey thanking her and their mother for their gifts
but advised them against purchasing expensive gifts for him and to consider saving his financial contributions to them for
more important matters. He also shared his thoughts about life after military service should he survive the war and whether
or not he should resume his career in banking or pursue his entrepreneurial aspirations in New York.
In a letter dated June 16, 1918, Krum shared some of his observations with Hannah about the differences in cultural practices
he observed in France. He noted that:
On November 13, 1918, Krum informed Hannah about the signed armistices wondering "how the people in the States are taking [the news]."many of the women smoke and drink their beer and wine but that does not look out of place at all. The women work in the fields and in fact many of the channels of manual labor. This looks awfully queer and distressing to me but the men are away so they get along as best they can.
This collection also contains:
- one photograph of an unidentified male in service uniform
- 1-newspaper clipping from 1990
- 1-leaflet titled "Let's Get Where We're Going" with J.J. Pershing's printed signature at bottom right-hand corner of recto.
- 1-booklet titled "Popular Songs of the A.E.F." with the the title page containing the following stating that this publication was "Compiled by the Bureau of Libraries and Periodicals." This booklet was published in Paris, 1918.
- 1-booklet titled "Personnel, Last Course: Army Candidates School, Fort de la Bonelle (near Langres) France, 1918-1919." It contains brief compilations of songs popular with the A.E.F's 9th Company, memorable quotes, and a roster of 9th Company and its 4 platoons. 15-pages.
