Biography/Administrative History

Louis Duino (1907-1997) retired as sports editor of the Mercury News in 1977 after 53 years at the newspaper. He covered the 1960, 1968, and 1972 Olympics for the paper. Golf was his sport of choice -- he started the Mercury's "Golf and Golfers" column -- and he supplemented his income early in his career by caddying on the weekends. In 1938 he became Sports Editor, and also wrote his "Louis Duino's Notebook" column until he retired. During World War II Duino also published FMC's newsletter as a second job.

Scope and Content of Collection

Duino's papers include extensive biographical material, including his typewritten autobiographical reminiscences, written after he retired from the San Jose Mercury news. A small number of clippings and correspondence are included, but his original telex filings from the 1972 Munich Olympics comprise the bulk of the material relating to his work as a sportswriter. Photographs capture Duino with notable athletes, including Cassius Clay and Mark Spitz, while an album created by the San Jose Mercury News as a retirement gift portrays Duino with his newspaper colleagues.
