A deed to four lots of land in Castroville, dated July 31, 1867, from Juan B. Castro and Maria Antonia Castro de Sanchez, Juana Castro de Merritt and Josiah Merritt to Jose de la Torres for 160 dollars.
Juan Bautista Castro was born in Monterey on June 24, 1835. He inherited eight leagues of land from his father, which he divided up in order to draw settlers to the region. He started the Castroville Argus and was also highly involved in the building of a railroad depot. In 1863 he founded Castroville, CA. He served twice as County Treasurer and twice as a member of the Board of Supervisors. He died in 1909. (Source: Martin, Claire. “Juan B. Castro”.
