    Biographical / Historical

Daniel F. Metzen was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1916. By the early 1940s, he had moved to California, working at a Quarantine Station at Hornbrook, Siskiyou County, located along what was then Highway 99. He also worked at Fruit Growers in Hilt, California, as a book keeper. He married Elaine Quigley in 1944. In 1958, Metzen received his Bachelor of Science degree in General Studies from Southern Oregon College in Ashland, Oregon. He then went on, 1963, to earn a Master of Science degree in Biology from West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. Eventually moving to the Sacramento suburb of Carmichael, Metzen taught Biology at San Juan High School from 1963 to 1967 and Environmental Conservation at American River College (ARC) from 1968 to 1982. He enjoyed exploring the different areas of California and especially embraced the variety of flora that the state offered. Not only was this a hobby for him, but he used his many photographs and trip experiences to add life to his instruction at ARC. He also used topographical maps to grow his own practical knowledge of the areas he explored and in order to share this information with students and those who had similar interests in conserving the environment. Metzen passed away in 1993.
