Acquisition Information

Purchased through Maggs Brothers, from Sotheby’s, Lot 2959, June 26, 1974. This material was previously owned by Benjamin Heywood Bright, then purchased by Thomas Phillipps of Middle Hill (Worcestershire, Eng.).

Biographical Note

Sir Leoline Jenkins (1625-1685), was a Welsh academic, jurist, diplomat and politician; as a diplomat he was involved with the negotiation of international treaties. He served as Secretary of State for the Northern Department from April 1680 to February 1681 and Secretary of State for the Southern Department from February 1681 to April 1684. Dr. Owen Wynne (1652-1700), a Welsh lawyer and civil servant, was Jenkins’ confidential secretary.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged chronologically. It is housed in six boxes.

Scope and Content

Correspondence, Newsletters and Parliamentary Proceedings Reports, 1676, Nov.-1680, Dec. (Boxes 1-5) are arranged chronologically. The material includes letters written to Sir Leoline Jenkins and his secretary, Dr. Owen Wynne, as well as newsletters (in English and French) written from various continental countries concerning the Scanian War, the Elector of Brandenburg, the Ottoman Turks and the Dutch War.
Another significant group of material includes extracts from the Journals of both Houses of Parliament dealing primarily with the Popish Plot, Catholics, Titus Oates and the Exclusion Crisis. This material also includes addresses, confessions, Articles of Impeachment, speeches and requests to attend the King.
The original roan-backed Middle Hill boards, with the label MS. 12256, from the collection of Thomas Phillipps are in Box 6.
The decision was made to modernize and standardize the spelling of countries, cities and place names on the folders and in the Finding Aid; this was done in order to facilitate electronic searching of the Finding Aid.
The material in this collection was written from the continent and England resulting in a variety of dating styles and calendars; the decision was made to use the date provided by each author without any attempt on the part of the cataloger to establish whether the date was Old or New style.
The Huntington Library also has Francis Benson newsletters to Sir Leoline Jenkins, 1676-1679 (HM 30314-30315).
