Edward Brown Walsworth (1819-1892) was born in Cleveland, Ohio; Walsworth married Sarah A. Pierson (1829-1912) in 1849 and served as pastor of the Presbyterian Church in East Avon, New York. In October 1852, the couple sailed to California on the clipper ship Trade Wind; Walsworth was a representative of the American Home Missionary Society. In 1853, he organized the first Presbyterian Church of Oakland, California, but soon left to become pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Marysville, California. At the same time, Walsworth was also filling the post of Yuba County Superintendent of Schools. He established the Female College of the Pacific in Oakland, California, in June 1863. The college was sold to the Pacific Theological Seminary in 1871, and Walsworth was put in charge of the Oakland Seminary before he returned to New York in 1876.
