Edward Brown Walsworth (1819-1892) was born in Cleveland, Ohio; Walsworth married Sarah A.
Pierson (1829-1912) in 1849 and served as pastor of the Presbyterian Church in East Avon,
New York. In October 1852, the couple sailed to California on the clipper ship Trade Wind;
Walsworth was a representative of the American Home Missionary Society. In 1853, he
organized the first Presbyterian Church of Oakland, California, but soon left to become
pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Marysville, California. At the same time, Walsworth was
also filling the post of Yuba County Superintendent of Schools. He established the Female
College of the Pacific in Oakland, California, in June 1863. The college was sold to the
Pacific Theological Seminary in 1871, and Walsworth was put in charge of the Oakland
Seminary before he returned to New York in 1876.
A collection of 138 items from 1840 to 1889, which consists of letters and documents. The
material is related to Edward Brown Walsworth and the Presbyterian Church in New York State
for the years 1840 to 1853, the Presbyterian Church in California from 1852 to 1883, and the
Female College of the Pacific from 1863 to 1871.
