Description
This collection contains 18 correspondence between members of the Temple family from 1857 to 1924, including correspondence from Charles W. Temple while serving during the Philippine-American War.
Background
First Sergeant Charles W. Temple, United States Army (3/7/1838 - 9/8/1908) was born in Manchester, Vermont to Jabez Temple and had seven siblings, including Albert H. Temple (wife Ellen) and Helen "Nellie" Temple Brigham who was a prominent inspirational speaker in New York at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1861, for reasons unknown, Charles joined to fight in the Civil War for the Confederate Army; with conflicting reports that he either served with the 1st Mississippi Brigade or the 1st Louisiana Regiment, though he is reported to have served under several prominent generals and incurred injuries at the Second Battle of Bull Run.
