A collection of copies of photographs from family albums and personal collections documenting daily life in Berkeley. Much of the materials covers the first three-quarters of the 20th century. Includes materials from the personal collection of numerous Berkeley residents including Joseph W. Charles (the "Waving Man"), Betty Reid Soskin, Euradee Maybuce, Fumi Hayashi, and several others.

Background

Biographical / historical:

Shades of South Berkeley was a neighborhood photograph collecting project conducted by the Berkeley Public Library's South Branch from 1998 to 1999. The project gathered copies of photographs from resident's personal collections. Participants brought their photographs to Berkeley Public Library's South Branch where copies made and given accession numbers. Each image is accompanied by a donor-authored description about what is depicted in their donated pictures This was part of the statewide Shades of California photo-history project started by the California State Library in 1997 that sought to increase the representation of diverse communities by inviting the public to archive copies of their family photographs.
