Description
A collection of 49 cartes de visite or photographic portraits of various European medical scientists and physicians active
during the second half of the 19th century, assembled by an unidentified former owner and housed in a commercially-produced
contemporary blank album, re-bound in brown calf over boards. The photographs originate from a number of different photography
studios, including: Atelier-Langhans (Prague), C. Brasch (Berlin), Chalot (Paris), Ernst Enke (Berlin), Adolf Halwas (Berlin),
A. Liébert (Paris), Fritz Leyde and Co. (Berlin), Loesche and Petsch (Berlin), J. Löwy (Vienna), Fritz Luckhardt (Vienna),
Pierre Petit (Paris), Ch. Reutlinger (Paris), and Julius Schaarwächer (Berlin). Most of the portraits have handwritten surnames
written in pen or pencil on the paper frame; some are dated in blindstamp on the photograph or printed on verso, or both (although
printed dates typically are two to six years later than blindstamped ones). Portraits include: Jean Charcot (no date), Louis
