    Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a patient letter. The correspondent (patient) visited the physician, Dr. John Green "to make application to you for relief when I was in Worcester [Massachusetts] last January [and] you was pleased to present me with a Phial containing something of Liquid kind and several Pills." The patient notes "I took that of the Liquid kind to be of the Mercurial Quality from the precautions you gave." However, the patient remarks that "the above prescription not having the desired effect or even in other words not any effect of consequence I am induced to again make application." The patient goes on to describe in detail his symptoms "considerable pain in my forehead which is attended with an apparent Stupidity...affecting every faculty." He or she also complains of numbness, "a disaffection of my Eyes [sic]," as well as "a tremor [which] affects my limbs when suspended and a general weakness prevails throughout the Nervous System." The correspondent closes with the note that "the baneful effects of the above described disorder that it is enough to arrest the ambition of the haughtiest youth." Finally, in a postscript the patient instructs the doctor that "Mr. Pierce the bearer of this letter will receive any orders you may see fit to give like wise satisfy your Bill." Signed "Sa.....A" remainder of signature is abbreviated.
