Materials related to Herbert Matter's design of the book Alberto Giacometti, including mock-ups, a planning binder, photostatic
negatives, hand-drawn typeface and page design sketches, notes, typescripts/drafts of the American and French editions, as
well as correspondence to and from Matter's wife, Mercedes, related to the French edition.
Born in the resort village of Engelberg, Switzerland, Herbert Matter is best known for his international contributions in
photography, photomontage, and graphic design work. Matter was also a filmmaker, exhibition designer, and professor. He photographed
a wide range of subjects in art, advertising, and fashion. His constant experimenting lead to ongoing refinements in composition,
typography, and a variety of printing techniques. He extensively photographed the work of sculptor Alberto Giacometti. His
book on Giacommetti was published in 1986, two years after his death.
