    Scope and Contents

    Materials related to Herbert Matter's design of the book Alberto Giacometti, including mock-ups, a planning binder, photostatic negatives, hand-drawn typeface and page design sketches, notes, typescripts/drafts of the American and French editions, as well as correspondence to and from Matter's wife, Mercedes, related to the French edition.

    Biographical / Historical

    Born in the resort village of Engelberg, Switzerland, Herbert Matter is best known for his international contributions in photography, photomontage, and graphic design work. Matter was also a filmmaker, exhibition designer, and professor. He photographed a wide range of subjects in art, advertising, and fashion. His constant experimenting lead to ongoing refinements in composition, typography, and a variety of printing techniques. He extensively photographed the work of sculptor Alberto Giacometti. His book on Giacommetti was published in 1986, two years after his death.
