    Biography

    Gil Kurland was an American production manager. From 1932 through 1938 he was head of the Sound and Music Departments at Universal. From 1938 through 1945 Kurland was a first assistant director and then a unit production manager at MGM. He returned to Universal as assistant production manager, and in 1951 became the studio production manager. He served as a production manager for Hecht-Hill-Lancaster Productions from 1957. Kurland's career ended in 1965 with a job as production manager on a Hanna-Barbera television pilot.

    Collection Scope and Content Summary

    The Gil Kurland papers span the years 1927-1969 and encompass 4.7 linear feet. The collection contains scripts and production material, including budgets for a number of feature films of the 1950s and 1960s and music recording estimates for several mid-1930s Universal films. Miscellaneous items relating to Kurland, include his passports and documentation of shooting locations in Germany, Mexico, and Spain. Of interest is a 1957 Pacific Coast studios payroll transcript for Universal employees, including musicians in the contract orchestra, a 1954 Universal studio organization chart, and a 1958 personnel directory and organization chart for Hecht-Hill-Lancaster. The collection also contains photographs. The photograph series consists of prints of motion picture production and biography photographs.
