    This collection is arranged by material type and date. Box 1 contains 17 issues dated April 5 - August 2, 1917. Box 2 contains 27 issues dated August 9, 1917 - January 31, 1918. Box 3 contains 27 issues dated Feb. 14, 1918 - August 15, 1918. Box 4 contains 31 issues dated August 22, 1918 - April 3, 1919.

    On April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson asked a special joint session of the United States Congress for a declaration of war against the German Empire.

    Content Description

    This collection contains 102 issues of The New York Times Mid-Week Pictorial, a supplement of the newspaper. Issues in this collection were published during the First World War and sold on newstands for ten cents and by subscription for $5.00 a year. The collection begins with April 5, 1917, Vol. 5 No. 5. edition. The last issue in the collection is April 3, 1919, Vol. 9, No. 5.Each issue is unique - there are no duplicates. Issues from June 7, 1917, Sept. 26, 1918 and Oct. 10, 1918 are not in the collection. The Pictorials contain photographs, maps, feature stories, and illustrations. Photographs are captioned and described. Subjects include the United States' preparation for war, the declaration, maps of battle lines, and scenes from Europe, Siberia, Africa, and the Middle East including troops, government and military leaders and heads of state, ships, weapons, battlefields, buildings, civilians, prisoners of war.
