    Biography

It is not readily discernable who N. Gray is, but it might be Nathaniel P. Gray (1808-1889), who set off for San Francisco from the east coast in February of 1850, to open a branch office of a funeral establishment there. He was involved in city politics and charitable works, and could well have known Thomas Larkin. No other N. Gray's were readily located in early San Francisco city directories, and a Nathaniel Gray is listed in the 1850, the 1852, and the 1852-53 San Francisco City Directories, with his occupation as: "Coffin ware-room, and then a "general furnishing undertaker".
