Background
Retired U.S. Navy, Captain Neil E. Nichols as the 3rd Superintendent of the University. He was the Navy officer brought in
after Superintendent Mayo was asked to step down due to the fact the the Training Vessel at the the time was Navy property.
Regulations required that only Navy officers could be in charge of Navy owned vessels. Unlike today, the position of Superintendent
also meant that you were the Master of the Training Ship.
It was under his leadership from July 1, 1937 to June 30, 1940; that the school transitioned from its original name, 'California
Nautical School', to the 'California Maritime Academy'.
