Abstract: The General Manuscript Collection contains interesting manuscripts, such as: The Three Evening Prayers in the hand of Jane
Austen's sister Cassandra, and her brother, Henry; The Temple of Kwan-Yin, by Stella Benson; The Trimmed Lamp, by O. Henry;
Taos Pueblo, by Mary Austin; The Big Four, by Oscar Lewis. Notable manuscripts outside these classifications include: For
the Cittern, a frequently reproduced music manuscript of the 16th century; Paralellement, by Paul Verlaine; Pardonnez-Nous
Nos Offenses, Andre Maurois's final version of his autobiography, Memoires.
A small sampling of letter-writers includes Ambrose Bierce, the Brownings, George Bernard Shaw, Christina Rossetti, Charles
Dickens, Samuel Clemens, C.E.S. Wood, George Sterling, Ella Young.
Even when the material is slight, it often offers the possibility of an intriguing accent to a book exhibition. Sigmund Freud's
card to Max Pollack, for example, or John Hay's polished phrases stating his affection for Bret Harte, whose manuscript, "Dickens
in Camp", is also in the collection. (From 1975, rev. 1981 description of collections, rev. 2020)
