Description
The Cooperative Outdoor Program (COP) was established at the University of California, Irvine in 1972 as a collaboration between the Student Activities Office and Recreation Office to bring the excitement of the outdoors to interested students, faculty, and staff. The program provided approximately 150 outings, seminars, and demonstrations annually, covering a wide range of activities and skill levels. Among the outing activities were canoeing, bicycling, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snow camping, mountaineering, rock climbing, backpacking. fishing, and downhill skiing. COP was run by director, Peter Bowler, and the outings were organized and led by students, faculty or staff. COP outings were designed to be low cost and an opportunity to meet people with similar interests in the outdoors, share expertise, and increase skills. The collection comprises event fliers, schedules of events, information sheets, correspondence, newsletters, and a guide book.
