California State College at Palos Verdes, also known as South Bay State College, was a four-year institution established by
legislative action presented by State Assemblyman Charles Edward Chapel and State Senator Richard Richards in 1960. Leo F.
Cain, former Vice-President of San Francisco State College and a national figure in American education, served as the first
president of the college in 1962.
A location on the Palos Verdes Peninsula near Crest Road and Highridge was selected largely due to the availability of undeveloped
land and the beauty of the site.
Architects A. Quincy Jones and Frederick E. Emmons were hired to create the campus master plan in 1963.
California State College at Palos Verdes, the 18th campus in the statewide system, officially opened in 1965 with 75 students
in rented office space in the California Federal Savings and Loan Association building.
Due to rising land values on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and financial difficulties, the California State College Board of
Trustees relocated the campus to a permanent home in Carson, California.
In September 1966, California State College at Palos Verdes was renamed California State College, Dominguez Hills. Ten years
later, it gained university status and was renamed, California State University, Dominguez Hills.
