Abstract: Oaths of Allegiance serve as solemn declarations in which elected or appointed officials pledge to "support and defend" the Constitutions of both the US and the State of California. Surety bonds act as financial guarantees that officials will perform their duties to the best of their abilities and within the bounds of the law. Examples of officials represented in this collection include judges of Superior Court, the County Clerk, the executive officer or court administrator of the Superior Court, and the Recorder. Files are not all inclusive and cover the years 1937-1998.

Scope and Content of Collection

The Oaths of Allegiance and Surety Bonds (1937-1998) consists of one manuscript box of preprinted oaths as mandated by section 3, Article XX of the California State Constitution and Surety bonds recorded per California Government Code Sections 1450-1463. Oaths have been signed and submitted by San Diego County officials in accordance with section 1363(a)(3) of the California Government Code. All officers elected or appointed and all officers who duties are local or whose residence in the county is prescribed by law are subject to this code and include judges of Superior Court, County Clerk, executive officer or court administrator of the Superior Court, Recorder, and all officers for any independent special district. Archives holdings are limited and are arranged primarily by agency, such as Board of Supervisors, Municipal Court Commissions, Superior Judges, etc. Note that files are not inclusive. Materials are not organized in any discernible order.
