George Webb is an American set designer and art director active in film from 1934 until his retirement
in 1977. He worked primarily for RKO and Universal, but was loaned out to other studios on numerous
occasions. He worked on THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (1939), CITIZEN KANE (1941), MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949),
HARVEY (1950), SPARTACUS (1960), and CLEOPATRA (1963). Among the art directors for whom he worked as an
assistant were Gene Allen, Henry Bumstead, John De Cuir, and Alexander Golitzen. His first credit as art
director was on TAMMY AND THE DOCTOR (1962). He received Academy Award nominations in the art direction
category for GAMBIT (1966), THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE (1967), SWEET CHARITY (1969) and AIRPORT '77 (1977).
Webb's wife Doreen worked in films as an assistant costume designer.
Collection Scope and Content Summary
The George C. Webb papers span the years circa 1950s-1970s and encompass approximately 2 linear feet.
The collection consists primarily of eight production design drawings; storyboard reproductions related
to several films, including THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE (1967); and an album assembled by Webb and his wife
Doreen, documenting their careers in the motion picture industry.
