    Abstract: These papers document the years David Roberti spent as California State Assemblymember for the 48th District (1967-71) and as California State Senator (1971-94). This includes his years as President Pro Tem of the Senate (1980-1994). The Roberti Papers consist of manuscripts, photographs, clippings, and printed material and came from Senator Roberti's Sacramento and district offices. The Research Collection of the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles thanks the Julia Stearns Dockweiler Foundation for its generous financial support in the processing of this collection.

    The initial acquistion of the David Roberti Papers occurred in June 1996 (accession number 1996.20.1). Later accruals followed:

    Processing Information

    Janet Evander was responsible for processing the initial series in the collection, circa 1997-1999. Clay Stalls processed Series 1, Subseries A: Weapons Bills (2000).Joe Purtell processed other series in the Roberti Papers. Denise Dobbs processed Series 6: Issues in 2005.

    Biography

    David Roberti was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1939. He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1961 from then Loyola University (now Loyola Marymount University), and his JD from the University of Southern California.He served in the California State Assembly from 1967 through 1971, and then in the California State Senate. He was President Pro Tem of the Senate from 1980 through 1994. His noteworthy career as a California state legislator resulted in the passage of the first gun control legislation in the United States (see Series 1, Subseries A).

    Collection Description

    These papers document the years David A. Roberti spent as California State Assemblymember for the 48th District (1967-71) and as California State Senator (1971-94). This includes his years as President Pro Tem of the Senate (1980-1994). Roberti, a 1961 graduate of Loyola University, donated the papers to Loyola Marymount University in 1996, followed by additional accruals. The Roberti Papers consist of manuscripts, photographs, clippings, and printed material and came from Senator Roberti's Sacramento and district offices. The Roberti Papers were the inaugural collection of the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles Research Collection.
