Biography
Erik M. Lauritzen was born in Illinois in 1953. After moving to California, he studied art, graduating from San Francisco
Art Institute with a B.F.A. in 1977, and from California State University, Northridge, with an M.F.A. in 1980. He exhibited
his own work consistently from the mid-1970s in galleries throughout California and in Nevada, as well as in many cities across
the continent. Besides his archive at the University of California, Santa Cruz (MS 23), there are also works in many collections
throughout the United States, including at the Kresge Art Museum in Lansing, Michigan, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh,
the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Johnson Museum in Ithaca,
New York.
Mr. Lauritzen was a curator for the Red Mountain Gallery at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, Nevada, where he founded
the photography and digital program, as well as two galleries that he curated for a decade. He also curated exhibits for
the Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies, Friends of Photography, and the Nevada Historical Society. He wrote articles,
served as a Master Course Instructor for the Maine Photographic Workshops, and as a juror for numerous photographic exhibitions
nationally. Nearly all of the photographs in this collection are from people he knew personally as friends and acquaintances
in the field of photography.
Erik M. Lauritzen died August 9, 2007, in Reno, Nevada.
Scope and Content of Collection
This collection contains 90 photographs by 37 known and several anonymous photographers. They range in age from a 1932 print
by Edward Weston to several images taken in 2003. Virtually all are original prints except for a couple of reproduction prints.
