    Administrative History

In the 1990s, UC San Diego saw a decrease in the number of students of color and other minority groups on campus. Students, faculty, and staff began to raise awareness about racial tensions and called for the establishment of a community center to serve the needs of underrepresented students. Several proposals for centers were submitted; including a 1990 proposal for the creation of a Latino center by UCSD's Chicano Concilio, a coalition of campus Chicano groups. Another proposal was submitted by the Student Affirmative Action Committee early in 1993. By the Summer of 1993, the Cross Cultural Center Coalition was created to represent a wide range of student and staff organizations, as well as several faculty members.
On January 31, 1994, the Cross Cultural Center Coalition submitted a proposal for the establishment of a center. In February 1994, Chancellor Richard Atkinson responded to increased calls for action by forming a task force to address the proposal presented by the coalition. By May 1994, the task force submitted their report to Atkinson recommending the establishment of a center and urged the appointment of a steering committee to follow up on its creation.
The Cross-Cultural Center (CCC) opened its doors on May 26, 1995. Since then, the center has been committed to student outreach and support, leadership development, and creating a space for meaningful dialog.
