The collection was donated to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in 2011. The provenance is not clear and may have been recovered from discarded material by the donor.

Historical or Biographical Note

The Haviside Company, located in San Francisco, California, operated a ship chandlery, rigging and sail loft, and a fleet of derrick barges. The company was founded by John Joseph Haviside (1844-1930).

Collection Scope and Content

The Haviside Company photographs, circa 1900-1945, bulk circa 1920-1940, (SAFR 23854, P11-001) is comprised mainly of photographs of Haviside derrick barges in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. The collection has been processed to the File Unit level and is open for use.
Contains photographs of Haviside Company derrick barges docked and handling cargo in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, circa 1900-1945, bulk circa 1920-1940. There are 33 black-and-white photographic prints. Includes photographs of HAVISIDE NO. 3 (built 1921; derrick barge), HAVISIDE CO. NO. 4 (built 1925; derrick barge), HAVISIDE CO. NO. 5 (built 1930; derrick barge), and HAVISIDE CO. NO. 6 (derrick barge). One group of photographs shows HAVISIDE CO. NO. 5 handling a DC-4E aircraft. The collection also includes one photograph of a Haviside Company trade show exhibit and two photographs of a rigging display.

Arranged into three File Units: File Unit 1: Derrick barges; File Unit 2: Haviside No. 5 handling a DC-4E; File Unit 3: Exhibits. File Unit 1 consists of photographs of various Haviside Company derrick barges. File Unit 2 contains photographs of HAVISIDE NO. 5 loading an airplane onto a freighter and File Unit 3 contains photographs of exhibits of Haviside Company products and services.

File Unit 1.  Derrick barges, circa 1900-1945

Extent: 16 photographs.
Physical Description: 16 black-and-white photographic prints, 5.5 x 8.5 in. to 7.5 x 11.5 in.

Scope and Content Note

Items 01-16. Consists of photographs of various Haviside Company derrick barges. Locations are unidentified, but likely in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.
Item list: Item 01: HAVISIDE NO. 3 (built 1921; derrick barge) docked, circa 1921-1940. Morton & Co. photographer stamp on verso with number "362136."
Item 02: HAVISIDE CO. NO. 4 (built 1925; derrick barge) and an unidentified Haviside derrick barge docked, circa 1925-1940. Morton & Co. photographer stamp on verso with number "316203."
Items 03-06: Four views of cargo being loaded on SIRIUS (built 1919; cargo ship: U.S. Navy) by HAVISIDE CO. NO. 5 (built 1930; derrick barge), circa 1940 August. Each print has a Bear Photo Service stamp on the verso with the date August 3, 1940. Item 04 has the following handwritten information on the verso: "The first load of equipment being sent to Midway Island on U.S.S. 'Sirius.' Loaded by Haviside Barge No. 5 and [illegible] by us. Three pontoons cut sections and put [illegible] in holds No-1 and 2. Three pontoons placed across No-1 Hatch. Weight approx. 30 Tons each."
Item 07: HAVISIDE CO. NO. 4 (built 1925; derrick barge) and HAVISIDE CO. NO. 5 (built 1930; derrick barge) moored, broadside view, circa 1930-1940.
Items 08-09: Derrick barge docked, circa 1925-1940. Possibly HAVISIDE CO. NO. 6. Another derrick barge is moored directly behind it. A Tidewater Associated Oil Company steamship is partially in view on the right. Item 08 is a deck view looking aft. Item 09 is a view from the dock with GENERAL FRANK M. COXE (built 1922; transport; U.S. Army) on the left. "151" is handwritten in pencil on the verso of Item 08 and "152" is handwritten in pencil on the verso of Item 09.
Items 10-11: HAVISIDE CO. NO. 6 (derrick barge) docked, circa 1925-1940. "153" is handwritten in pencil on the verso of Item 10 and "154" is handwritten in pencil on the verso of Item 11.
Item 12: Derrick barge, stern view, circa 1925-1940. Possibly HAVISIDE CO. NO. 6. General Engineering and Dry Dock building is in the background. "155" is handwritten in pencil on the verso.
Item 13: Haviside derrick barge loading a boiler onto SHINPO MARU (built 1918; freighter), circa 1918-1930.
Item 14: Two U.S. Army barges, BKO-378 and BKO-379, stacked on top of each other dockside, circa 1925-1945. The cargo boom of a Haviside derrick barge is in view on the right, handling BKO-378.
Item 15: Haviside derrick barge in the stream, bow view, circa 1920-1940.
Item 16: Derrick barge docked alongside a landing, circa 1900-1930. "Henry Peters / Stevedore" is painted on the side of the structure on board. Santa Fe A.T. & S.F. and Southern Pacific boxcars are along the waterfront. In the background is a pier with "[not visible]ville Street Landing" painted on it and a steamship docked alongside.
 

File Unit 2.  Haviside Co. No. 5 handling a DC-4E, 1939 September

Physical Description: 13 black-and-white photographic prints, 8 x 10 in; 1 black-and-white photographic print, 6.75 x 11 in.

Scope and Content Note

Items 17-30. Consists of photographs of HAVISIDE CO. NO. 5 (built 1930; derrick barge) handling a DC-4E airplane. The airplane had been sold to Japan. It was loaded onto HAVISIDE NO. 5 and towed from the Oakland Airport to a Japanese freighter in the San Francisco Bay. Most views show the vessel suspended in the air alongside the freighter and being placed on the freighter's deck. Item 30 shows the vessel loaded on the freighter with HAVISIDE CO. NO. 5 alongside. Item 17 has the following information handwritten on the verso in ink: "Lifting the D.C. 4 and carrying it high enough to go over the top of Bay Farm Island Bridge as the opening between the Bridge and walk was too narrow for wing spread. With wings and Tail off the dimensions are as follows. Length 96' - Width 72'." Items 18-30 have "Arthur B. Geen / 6121 Harwood Ave. / Oakland, Calif., U.S.A." stamped on the verso.
 

File Unit 3.  Exhibits, 1925-1943

Extent: 3 photographs.
Physical Description: 2 black-and-white photographic prints, 7.75 x 11 in.; 1 black-and-white photographic print, 7.75 x 9.75 in.

Scope and Content Note

Items 31-33. Consists of three photographs of Haviside Company displays.
Item 31 shows a Haviside Company trade show exhibit, circa 1925-1935. There are two displays of sails with signs that read "Sails / Bird No. 13 and Cub Boat / Made of this Special / Yacht Duck / by / Haviside Co. / Sail Makers. Ship Riggers. / Ship Chandlers." A display case and a long table contain various equipment including lanterns, steering wheels, blocks, hinges, and other small parts. Hanging above the table are burgees from the Aeolian Yacht Club, Oakland Yacht Club, Corinthian Yacht Club, and San Francisco Yacht Club, as well as a Jack of the United States and United States yacht ensign. A St. Francis Yacht Club burgee is on the table. Displays for other companies are in the background. A Gilligcraft yacht, manufactured by Gillig Brothers of San Francisco, is exhibited behind the Haviside Company's area. A Morton & Co. photographer stamp is on the verso with the number "21586".
Items 32 and 33 are photographs of a rigging display, circa 1943 April 28. One photograph shows three motor oil barrels suspended in the air and the other photograph is a close-up view of the rigging. Lumber and large coils of rope are in the background. Both prints have "983" handwritten on the verso as well as the following stamps on the verso: "Haviside Company / 40 Spear Street / San Francisco, Calif."; "APR 28 '43"; and "Enlargement by Eastman Kodak Stores".
