Scope and Content

Photographs document sightseeing activities of a group of men, possibly brothers, their wives, and a little girl in and around the city of Los Angeles. The album contains several photos of the Earlcliffe Hotel, located at 231 S. Bunker Hill, as well as the view from a room at the hotel, suggesting that some members of the group are tourists, perhaps visiting family or friends who live in Los Angeles. The group visits Mt. Lowe, riding the narrow-gauge rail cars up through the canyons to Ye Alpine Tavern. Atop Mt. Wilson, there are views of the observatory and the sun tower. Numerous photos record outings to beaches, palisades, and piers in Santa Monica, Redondo Beach--there is a photo of the roller coaster there--and Manhattan Beach, where the group also visits gardens overlooking the ocean. Other photos include views of lemon groves in Laurel Canyon, boating and swans in Hollenbeck Park, the boathouse and palms of Westlake Park (now MacArthur Park), and palms and duck pond of Echo Park. Also included are numerous photographs of the rocky coast and surf at Point Firmin in San Pedro, and a wooded rocky stream in the Arroyo Seco. Several photos document the group's visit to one of several battle ships lying offshore (probably the USS Texas or the USS New York, both of which, as part of the Battle Fleet, were based in San Pedro between 1919 and 1925), and include a close-up view of the battery guns on deck of one of the ships. They also visit the Selig Zoo in Eastlake Park (later Lincoln Park), established in 1913 by motion picture pioneer William Selig to house the animals he used in his films, and the alligators of what is probably the Los Angeles Alligator Farm, a major tourist attraction between 1907 and 1953, located in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. One photo (91 x 148 mm) of Victoria Glacier from the Chateau at Lake Louise in Canada, captioned and dated July 2, 1925 in brown ink on recto, is laid in.
Possible range of dates from date of sheet music of "Caresses" visible in photograph, and date of photograph laid in.
