contain short entries, addresses, newspaper clippings and letters from shipbuilders. The newspaper clippings are about the
CITY OF PEKING (passenger vessel) and the battleship BENNINGTON. This collection has been processed to the collection level
and is open for use without restrictions.
Captain John Leale was born in 1850 in Guernsey. He came to San Francisco in 1864, and was employed around 1880, originally
with the South Pacific Coast Narrow Gauge Service. He served as captain on numerous ferry steamers, including ENCINAL, GARDEN
CITY, OAKLAND, BAY CITY, PIEDMONT, and NEWARK. Captain Leale retired in 1914 after 36 years of continuous service aboard ferry
steamers in San Francisco Bay. He died in San Francisco on December 31, 1932. An older brother, William G. Leale, also served
as a ship captain aboard vessels in San Francisco Bay. Researchers should review Captain John Leale's autobiography titled
Recollections of a Tule Sailor.
