Biographical Note

Paul Lieberenz (1893-1954) was a German filmmaker and writer famous for his expeditions and subsequent documentaries on wild game in Africa. He was one of the first German documentary film producers. Between 1923 and 1939 he travelled several times to Africa. From 1927 to 1929 Lieberenz undertook an expedition with Sven Hedin to Inner Mongolia and Lapland, the most elaborately equipped of Hedin's expeditions.

Scope and Content

Cinematography archive, documenting the travels and work of Paul Lieberenz from 1923 to 1954. The collection features over 345 photographs, four passports and other identification papers, eleven dossiers containing letters and assorted documents, original film typescripts, two large binders of contracts with production studios and other related material, eight personalized steel-and-copper-engraved plates, newspaper reviews, and nine pocket-sized day journals. The collection also includes some posthumous items relating to Lieberenz's death and a biography in his honor. Most of the text is in German, with a few documents in both German and English.

Arrangement

The collection is divided into the following five series: Series 1. Dossiers, Series 2. Photographs, Series 3. Passports and ID cards, Series 4. Clippings, and Series 5. Miscellaneous artifacts.
