Biography

Carlos L. Reed was born on October 15, 1875 in Zanesville, Ohio and married Laura Alice Glyn Reed (born August 29, 1880 in Trego County, Kansas) on August 1, 1900 in Topeka, Kansas. Carlos and Laura had four daughters, Gladys Leona Reed Dickson (1901-1946), Mabel Louise Reed Tanner (1903-1950), Dorothy Mildred Reed (1909-1934) and Kathleen Bernice Reed Wickham (1917 - ). Per the family history, Carlos helped his mother raise his seven siblings by selling papers and "blacking boots" after his father abandoned them in 1887. In 1910, Carlos and Laura moved to Garden City, Kansas. He was a farmer whose mortgage was foreclosed on during the Great Depression, after which time he worked for the WPA. Carlos died on June 23, 1953 in Colton, California. Laura died on December 8, 1959.
Laura was the daughter of Henry Glyn and Sarah Samantha Shelby Glyn, one of seven children. Her father, Henry, was born on January 29, 1841 in Indiana and married Sarah in 1866. They owned a 40 acre farm in Pike County, Illinois which they sold to homestead in Trego County, Kansas. After suffering from poor crop yields, they sold the 160 acres for $50 and relocated to a 20 acre farm near Grantville, Kansas. Per the family history, Henry experimented with potato crops and was "one of the pioneers of the huge Kaw Valley potato industry." Henry's date of death is unknown.

Scope and Content

The Manuscript series is arranged chronologically and contains nine journals written by Henry Glyn from 1881 to 1909 regarding his farming and life in Kansas. They include daily entries regarding growing and selling his produce, details regarding family matters, and calculations related to his finances and business income and expenses. The Correspondence series is arranged chronologically and predominantly contains letters amongst various family members, including Merry Ovnick, from the 1980s to 2003 as they worked on genealogical projects. Also included in the series are letters by and for the Round Robin Reeders, a set of circulating letters written by members of the Reed family from the 1950s through the 1960s. The Ephemera series is arranged alphabetically and contains genealogical trees and histories, government and legal documents, newspaper clippings, miscellaneous personal papers (including a graduation announcement and report card) and forty-one photographs. The genealogical trees and histories include the Reed-Glyns' efforts to trace their ancestors. The photographs of the Reed-Glyn families are divided into two folders, ranging from 1884 to 1949. Included is one tintype from circa 1884. There is also a copy of a printed book: "History of Grantville Kansas: 1954-1976."
