Abstract: The collection spans the years 1959 to 2012 and consists of five series: Personal Papers, Professional Papers, Faculty Papers,
Project Records, and Posters. His student work and his extensive career as an author, lecturer, and book, exhibit, and graphic
designer make up the majority of the collection.

Biographical note
Marc Treib (1943- ) was born in New York, NY; he later moved to Miami, Florida where he attended high school. During high
school he began his study of architecture and design, laying the foundation for his career. After graduating from Miami Beach
High School in 1961, he attended the University of Florida, receiving his Bachelor of Architecture in 1966. That same year
he was awarded a Fulbright-Hayes Fellowship in Architecture and Design for study in Finland. Treib describes this experience
as “broadening his understanding of [the] relationship of architecture and culture, sensibility, and the pervading power of
language.” He continues to travel throughout the world expanding his interests and research in the fields of architecture,
landscape architecture and design.
Following the completion of his fellowship, he attended the University of California, Berkeley and received a Master of Architecture
in 1968 and his Master of Arts (Design) the following year. He joined the UCB Department of Architecture in 1969 and taught
there for nearly 40 years before becoming professor emeritus. Honors include Senior Fulbright Fellowship to Finland (1982)
and Western Europe (1992), the Distinguished Teaching Award (1987), Advanced Design Fellowship at the American Academy in
Rome (1985), and a Japan Foundation Professional Fellowship (1987). His courses included topics on architectural design, graphic
design, drawing, architectural history, and Japanese architecture and gardens.
Treib has been a prolific writer and speaker. In addition to numerous books, his book reviews, essays, his articles on architecture,
landscape architecture, graphic design, architectural history, and design theory have appeared in Idea, Print, Progressive
Architecture, Design Book Review, Landscape Architecture, Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Journal of the
American Institute of Graphic Arts and foreign journals. Treib has served as a contributing editor for Print Magazine and
on the editorial boards of Design Issues, AIGA Journal, Places, Design Book Review, Landscape Journal, Journal of Landscape
Architecture and Landscape Research. Among his books are: A Guide to the Gardens of Kyoto (1980); Space Calculated in Seconds:
The Philips Pavilion; Le Corbusier; Edgard Varèse (1996); An Everyday Modernism: The Houses of William Wurster (1995); and
Drawing/Thinking: Confronting an Electronic Age (2008). His contributions to publishing are not limited to the works he has
authored and edited, but also include work as a book designer and contributor to numerous collected works. He has lectured
at colleges, universities, professional organizations, and conferences around the world on a range of architectural and design
topics.
In addition to writing, speaking, and teaching Treib has maintained a design practice. IN earlier years he participated in
landscape and architecture design competitions and worked as a graphic designer focusing on poster and book design. His curatorial
and exhibition design includes An Everyday Modernism: The Houses of William Wurster (1995) at the San Francisco Museum of
Modern Art and Garret Eckbo: Modern Landscapes for Living (1997) at the University Art Museum, Berkeley. There have also been
several exhibitions of his own design work. Marc Treib continues to live and work in Berkeley, CA.

The collection is arranged into five series. For a majority of the collection original order has been maintained. An order
has been imposed on those sections where no original order was evident.
Scope & Contents note
The Marc Treib collection spans the years 1959-2012, and is organized into five series: Personal Papers, Professional Papers,
Faculty Papers, Project Records and Posters. The Collection documents his career including his education, writing, speaking,
architecture, landscape, graphic, book, and exhibit design and teaching.
The Personal Papers series is divided into five subseries. The majority of this section includes some examples of student
work from high school through graduate school, including his Fulbright Fellowship in Finland. There are few examples of his
early artwork and photographs of his Berkeley home.
Professional Papers is the largest series in the collection. The first subseries includes one folder of professional correspondence.
The following three subseries consist of correspondence, drafts, and research materials related to Treib’s writing projects
including articles, essays, chapters in books, monographs, lectures, and conferences. The correspondence, plans, and drawings
for exhibitions designs demonstrate the range and depth of Treib’s research interests and his contributions to the profession.
Also included in this series is information on his involvement in various professional organizations, reviews of his work
and honors he has received. Faculty Papers includes teaching materials, slides, samples of student work and records documenting
his involvement in the department.
The Project Records series contains drawings and plans for architecture and landscape projects and competition entries, as
well as records pertaining to book and graphic design. The final series, Posters, is primarily flat folders of the posters
Treib designed throughout his career, mainly for lectures in the Department of Architecture, College of Environmental Design,
and the Department of Dramatic Arts, UCB.
Custodial History
The collection was located in Treib’s home until its acquisition in 2012.

Scope and Contents
Correspondence contains invitations and cards designed by Treib for various parties and events arranged by type of event.
Student work consists of general course materials, as well as projects, notes, assignments, and drawings completed by Treib
at Miami Beach High School, University of Florida, UC Berkeley, and during his Fulbright Fellowship in Finland. Materials
are arranged into four sub-subseries by school. Travel includes journals kept by Treib while in Europe, Japan, and America.
Photographs include portraits of Treib from college and color photographs of the interior of his studio in Berkeley. Artwork
is a single folder of oil pastel flowers drawn by Treib.

Scope and Contents
Consists of architectural plans, drawings and proposals done by Treib individually and in collaboration with others. Many
are submissions to design competitions. These projects include educational buildings, gardens and parks, memorials and sculptural
installations. Among Treib’s collaborators are the architects Stanley Saitowitz and William Turnbull, and landscape architect
Ron Herman. The subseries on book design includes correspondence, drawings, mock-ups and layouts. Treib’s graphic design materials
include correspondence with clients, including Berkeley Solar Group, UCB, and architect Jeff Falkanger.
