Scope and Contents note

This folder contains two copies of a letter from John M. Bailhache regarding a his donation of a copy of a letter by Elliot to Mason Brayman on 03/10/1850, as well as a typed transcript of said letter. The letter describes Elliot’s overland journey to San Francisco that same year and the lifestyle and habits of the people of San Francisco. He also describes the landscape and environment he experienced while crossing by wagon train from Mount Pleasant, Iowa to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1849 and then from Salt Lake City to California during the winter of 1849 and 1850. The transcript maintains Elliot’s misspellings and poor grammar. Many of the comments he makes may be exaggerations, though Elliot appears to have believed some of them to be true.
