Biography/Administrative History
Eileen Hansen (1951-2016) was a lesbian activist who was Executive Director of the National Lawyers’ Guild AIDS Network (NLGAN),
Public Policy Director of the AIDS Legal Referral Panel, and ran for Supervisor in District 8 in 2000 and 2002.
Scope and Content of Collection
This collection contains material related to the political work and professional career of longtime lesbian activist, Eileen
Hansen. The papers cover two decades of her activism in progressive politics, from 1982-2002. During this period, Hansen was
Executive Director of the National Lawyers’ Guild AIDS Network (NLGAN), Public Policy Director of the AIDS Legal Referral
Panel and ran (unsuccessfully) for Supervisor in District 8 in 2000 and 2002. Prominent subjects in the collection include
progressive political agendas and alliances in San Francisco; the People’s Budget Collaborative; Supervisor Tom Ammiano’s
1999 mayoral campaign; campaigns and politics in District 8; AIDS activism, the NLGAN and the AIDS Legal Referral Panel; community
usage for 400 Castro Street; civil disobedience and the Bay Area Committee for the National March for Lesbian and Gay Rights
in Washington in 1987; local Northern California organizing efforts for the 1989 National Lesbian Conference; and issues relating
to women and lesbians. There are a wide range of materials in the collection, including board materials; correspondence, e-mails
and memos; executive summaries, reports and working papers; flyers; mailing lists; meeting agendas and minutes; news clippings;
newsletters; notes; photographs; speeches; videotapes; audiocassettes; campaign signs; and a portrait of Hansen by artist
Freddie Niem. Additionally, there is material related to Burt Gerrits that Eileen Hansen donated to the GLBT Historical Society.
