The League of Women
Voters of Glendale/Burbank, a chapter of the League of Women Voters of the United States, is
a grassroots nonpartisan political organization encouraging the informed and active
participation of citizens in government through voter registration, public education, and
advocacy. The materials in the collection document the chapter's activities throughout its
existence (1941-2020) and include administrative operational files, as well as project and
program files. There are also some materials that document the activities and operations of
other local, regional, state, and national level chapters of the League. The collection
consists primarily of textual materials and includes some ephemera, photographs, news
clippings, and audiovisual materials.
Background
The League of Women Voters (LWV) is a grassroots nonpartisan political organization
encouraging the informed and active participation of citizens in government, and operating
at the local, regional, state and national levels. It was founded in 1920. The League of
Women Voters of Glendale/Burbank (LWVGB) was one of the local leagues that comprised the
regional League of Women Voters of Los Angeles County (LWVLAC). The members of the
Glendale/Burbank chapter were also members of the of the leagues that operated in the
hierarchy above them: the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles County, the League of Women
Voters of California, and the League of Women Voters of the United States. The League of
Women Voters of Glendale was established in 1941. In 1988 the League of Women Voters of
Glendale changed it's named to the League of Women Voters of Glendale/Burbank. Then, in 2020
The League of Women Voters Glendale/Burbank dissolved as a separate corporation and merged
into the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles (LWVLA).
