Research and Publication files include documentation collected during Dr. Robert Allen's process of researching, interviewing, writing and publication of The Port Chicago Mutiny from his initial Ph.D thesis work at UCSF in the late 1970s to the publication of the first edition of his book in 1989 and subsequent editions and revisions. Includes interviews with Port Chicago survivors, general research articles about African-Americans in the U.S. Navy and other historical context, and research materials about the Port Chicago explosion and subsequent court inquiry from the National Archives, Judge Advocate General inquiry, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and other sources.

Scope and Contents

The Appeals and Commemoration files include documentation about appeals and pardon efforts to exonerate those accused and tried in the Port Chicago Court of Inquiry mutiny trial, most notably includes documentation on the pardon of Freddie Meeks and includes appeals for state and federal resolutions. Commemoration materials include documentation on events to honor and commemorate the victims of the Port Chicago disaster, the Port Chicago Naval Magazine (later named the Concord Naval Weapons Station) site and the town of Port Chicago; includes materials related to the design and approval of the Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Park memorial and activities of the Friends of Port Chicago community group. Derivative Works files consist of documentation on creative works derived or sourced from the the research and publication of Dr. Allen's The Port Chicago Mutiny book, including plays, screenplays, scholarly papers and a jazz ballet suite commissioned by the Equal Justice Society.
