Custodial History
The collection was owned by Helen Roach, a descendant of the Beachcroft family, who were
descendants of the Leigh family. The collection had previously been on deposit at the
Bodleian Library since the 1970s and was removed by Helen Roach in the 2010s.
Biographical / Historical
The Leigh family, descended from Sir Thomas Leigh, Lord Mayor of London for Queen Elizabeth
I, were a long-established family in Adlestrop in Gloucestershire. They were connected by
marriage to many other wealthy families in Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, including the
Dukes of Chandos and the Austens; the Leighs of Adlestrop were Jane Austen's maternal
relatives.
Scope and Contents
A collection of correspondence, manuscripts, poems, and research material related to the
Leigh family of Adlestrop, England. The correspondence includes multiple generations of men,
women, and children of the Leigh family, their extended families, friends, business and
political associates. The research material was compiled by Gwen Beachcroft in the 20th
century and includes indexes, transcriptions, correspondence, photocopies, and family
trees.

Scope and Contents
This series includes letters, documents, manuscripts, and poems related to the Leigh
family of Adlestrop and their extended family, friends, and business and political
associates. There is a large group of letters from William Leigh (1691-1757) to his
younger brother Theophilus Leigh (1693-1785), Master of Balliol College, Oxford; and a
second large group of letters from Theophilus Leigh to his daughter Mary "Molly" Leigh
Leigh (1731-1797). The material is written by multiple generations of the Leigh,
Chandos/Brydges, Hastings, and Cooke families, and also includes letters written by
women and children. The letters discuss domestic, religious, business, and political
issues in England during the 17th and 18th centuries. Subjects include health, illness,
and death; marriage and childbirth; education and university life; patronage; and
politics and government. The material in this series contains page numbering,
annotations, and notes made by Mary Leigh Leigh and others in her time, as well as other
owners over the centuries.

Scope and Contents
This series includes family research material compiled in the 20th century by Gwen
Beachcroft, a descendant of the Leigh family. Included in the series are three bound
volumes containing autograph transcriptions of the letters in the collection and letters
in other repositories. Gwen Beachcroft also created multiple name, card, place, and
events indexes, family trees, and pedigrees; she collected articles about the Leigh
family and had correspondence with individuals and institutions concerning her
research.
