Biographical / Historical

The San Francisco Players Guild was an organization created to provide live theater performances to a wide audience: schools, communities, senior centers, and other locations. It was one of the first theater organizations to provide study materials to accompany the performances.
The San Francisco Players Guild was started by Martha Bigelow Eliot in 1949 at the Municipal Theatre of San Francisco (operating under the Adult Division of the San Francisco Unified School District) to teach adult class in a children's theatre. In 1950-1951 it continued to do the same work under the name San Francisco Children Theatre with volunteer actors. In the 1952-1953 season the name was changed to the San Francisco Players Guild. The Players Guild would typically put on 1-2 plays per season, with around 150-225 total performances per season. The Players Guild was active from 1949 to around 1974.
