This 42 page engine room logbook is for a trip from New York to San Francisco, December 12, 1853 to January 4, 1854 aboard the SAN FRANCISCO. The Pacific Mail Steamship Company vessel was carrying passengers as well as troops. Beginning entries recorded information about the engine, steam, sails, etc. until the piston rod of the air pump broke. The remainder of the entries account this incident including the storm, bailing, work on the air pump, and meeting other vessels, especially the THREE BELLS of Glasgow (pages 26-42) and ANTARTIC (pages 35-42). During this the troops and passengers are put aboard the bark KILBY of Boston which is homebound. Colonel Gates, commander of the troops, often mentions others in the military.
