    Content Description

This collection contains fourteen correspondence written by T/5 Anthony J. Stupar, USA to his wife Stella during the Second World War. Also included are six original photographs of T/5 Stupar with his mother, wife, and fellow serviceman. The correspondence includes three Western Union telegrams, five V-Mail, of which one was written by SSgt. Michael Breganti of the same unit and one is in full form and not miniaturized, as well as two postcards. Included in the collection is one order to appear to the Selective Service Local Board for Anthony Stupar for a blood test in April 1942.
The first telegram asks Stella not to check out of her hotel because he has leave until later that night, while training in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in October 1942. The two postcards are from training in Virginia at Camp Pickett that same year. The two remaining telegrams are for Stella to say Merry Christmas 1943 and Happy Birthday in February 1944.
By March 1944, T/5 Stupar is overseas in North Africa and has a dog. A V-Mail from a fellow serviceman in the same unit, SSgt. Mike Breganti, discusses a pet monkey but the writing is largely illegible. In December 1944 Stupar mentions his visit to Naples, Rome, and Pompeii and describes the ancient Roman paintings that remain after the destruction of Vesuvius in ancient times (though the volcano is not mentioned by name). In this V-Mail, he give the Germans "a little credit" for not destroying the ancient sites in Rome, considering the destruction he had seen elsewhere. Some of the places he visited were blacked out by the censor. He also discusses the poverty of the Italian people and finds another unit that brought his pet dog from Oran in Algeria. Included is one V-mail Christmas, and one Easter card for 1944 and 1945 respectively.
The photographs include one of Stupar in uniform, one with him in uniform with Stella, another with he, Stella and his mother Mary, two of him in uniform in North Africa including one with his dog, and a photograph of him and SSgt. Mike Fortunato of Greater Buffalo, New York from Oran, Algeria (French Algeria, North Africa).
