History
The mission of the UC Davis Cross Cultural Center (CCC) is to celebrate and promote the heritage and culture of
historically underrepresented, currently underserved, and marginalized groups. It sponsors multicultural arts and educational
programs and performances, including cultural heritage days, folklorico dance troupe Danzantes del Alma, community retreats,
and peer-to-peer education groups.
The CCC was founded in 1990 as a direct result of student activism and political struggle. In May 1990, four students
launched a hunger strike on the steps of Mrak Hall in response to experiences of discrimination on campus. They presented
a
list of demands to be met in order to end the hunger strike, including: launching an official investigation into alleged
racism in the Spanish Department, establishing an on-campus ethnic and cultural center, and increasing the number of
full-time faculty members in the Afro-American, Asian American, Native American, and Chicano Studies Programs. After six days
of fasting, an agreement was reached with university administration and a work group soon formed to plan a campus cultural
center. In late May, the work group announced the projected opening of the center at the Ag Extension building, and the Cross
Cultural Center formally opened its doors there in Fall of 1992. The Ag Extension building remained home to the Cross
Cultural Center until January 2012, when the CCC moved to the newly constructed Student Community Center.
