Scope and Contents
This series comprises Robert A. Nash's writings on Chinese
shrimp/abalone fisheries, fishing camps, and Chinese nautical vessels (sampans, junks, .etc) in California in the 1880s. There
are about including his final doctoral dissertation, his publications in scholarly journals (e.g., Journal of the Nautical
Research Guild, Chinese Historical Society of America, East West, etc.), and papers written in the course of his PhD studies.

Scope and Contents
This series contains the research materials Dr. Nash collected throughout his dissertation work and comprises the large majority/bulk
of this collection. Nash performed extensive research into Chinese American communities and Chinatowns in California (from
the 1880s to early 1900s). It appears that while his dissertation was on the Chinese Shrimp Fisheries in California, his extensive
notes and research imply that he was going to conduct a more broad,
wideranging study on the general conditions of the Chinese in America during the late 19th century. However, his death shortly
after the completion of his doctoral dissertation prevented this from coming to fruition.

Contains field notes, statistical surveys, population indexes, diagrams, and more pertaining to the Chinese in California/U.S.
and Chinese fishing/marine transportation vessels dating from about 1860 to 1960. Many are made on random pieces of notepaper,
scratch paper, and stenographic/graphical notebooks with detailed drawings and measurements. Also includes some maps and topographical
surveys that Nash collected during his research.

Scope and Contents
This series comprises physical artifacts and shards collected during the course of Robert Nash's research on Chinese fishing
industry in California, and are derived from the original sites of 1880s Chinese shrimp camps, which were located in the San
Pablo Bay area near San Francisco. Years ago, Eugene Moy (former president of CHSSC), his wife, and Rick Eng (CHSSC member-at-large)
traveled to the San Pablo area where they spoke with a last surviving member of a family (an elderly gentleman of mixed race
heritage), who used to run a shrimp fishery in the early 19th century. When the area became a national park, the man (who
was half-Chinese, half-Caucasian) was allowed to continue living on part of the encampment and work as a groundskeeper, until
he passed away in 2016. Park rangers also took it upon themselves to build a life-sized replica/reproduction of one of the
Chinese junks that used to sail to and from the area.
