    Processing Note

    Note: the original accession paperwork states that there were (4) 8 x 10 in. prints; however, only three were located at the time of processing. A copy negative of one of the prints (Item 01) was made by park staff in April 1998 and has been added to the item count.
    The accession paperwork also lists the steam schooner CASPAR as the subject of one of the photographs in the collection, but it is not clear which photograph the vessel is in.

    Gift from the estate of Carlos A. Call via Mercedes P. Stafford.
    SAFR-00001 is a blanket accession that was transferred from the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in September 1988. GGNRA had previously acquired the collection from the San Francisco Maritime Museum when it became a unit of the National Park Service in 1977.
    GOGA-00789 was transferred from the J. Porter Shaw Library to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) in February 1985.

    Historical or Biographical Note

    Carlos Asa Call was born in Fort Ross, California, on June 2, 1880, to George Washington Call (1829-1907) and Mercedes Leiva (1850-1933). He had two brothers and six sisters. George Washington Call purchased the land at Fort Ross in 1873 and established Call Ranch. Carlos lived on the ranch until his death on December 20, 1972. The land is now part of the Fort Ross State Historic Park.

    The Carlos A. Call photograph collection, circa 1900-1930, (SAFR 24842, P74-012L) is comprised mainly of photographs of steam schooners at Fort Ross and other Sonoma Country, California, lumber ports. The collection has been processed to the Collection level and is open for use.
    Contains photographs primarily of steam schooners tied to the moorings at Fort Ross, California, and views at other lumber ports, including shipwrecks, along the Sonoma County coast, circa 1900-1930. There are 29 unique photographic images in 31 physical forms (30 black-and-white photographic prints and 1 copy negative).

    • 17-19. Lumber chute at Timber Cove, California. An unidentified steam schooner is in view in two of the photographs. The chute was formerly located at Fort Ross, sold by Carlos Call, and moved to Timber Cove. 3 black-and-white photographic prints, 3.5 x 5 in.
