Description
This collection consists primarily of plaques and awards given Rev. Thomas P. O’Malley, S.J., prior to his service at Loyola Marymount University.
Background
Reverend Thomas P. O’Malley, S.J., was born in Massachusetts in 1930 and died in Boston in 2009. He became a novitiate of the Society of Jesus sometime around 1953 and was ordained in Brussels in 1961. Six years later he earned his doctorate in early Christian Theology from Nijmegen University (the Netherlands). He taught at Boston College, chairing the Classics department and the Department of Theology, before leading the College of Liberal Arts there. In 1980 he became president of John Carroll University in Cleveland and in 1991 assumed the presidency of Loyola Marymount University, where he led a significant expansion of the school’s endowment and physical infrastructure as well as hiring a significant number of minority faculty members. He left LMU in 1999.
