Abstract: This is a small collection housed in one oversized document box, mainly one large binder assembled by the artist that consists of a cross section of documentation representing her work. Contents include ephemera and photos of the artist’s exhibits between 1980 and 2011. Another segment of the collection consists of slide documentation provided by the artist concerning her work that is found in the Self Help Graphics and Art Archives (CEMA 3) and in the Shifra Goldman Papers (CEMA 119) housed in the UCSB California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives of the Department of Special Collections.

Biographical Information

Diane Gamboa is a visual artist from Los Angeles California. She attended East Los Angeles College as well as the Otis Art Institute. She has been producing art, exhibiting her work, and curating visual art for over 30 years, and has been involved in many different forms of art education ranging from after-school programs, art programs for homeless youth, and in college and university settings. Her recent solo exhibitions include "Bruja-Ha" at the Tropico de Nopal Gallery , "Chica Chic" in the Correia Gallery in Santa Monica, and she has exhibited in this country and abroad, including nationally traveling shows such as the iconic, Chicano Art: Resistance and Affirmation.” Diane is a life-long resident of Los Angeles. In the early 80’s she photo-documented the East L.A. punk rock scene. Through most of the 1980s she was involved in the performance art group, ASCO. Diane organized many site-specific "Hit and Run" paper fashion shows that became so popular that some of the outfits she created are now housed in museums. During the 1990s and the 2000s she created many new works using acrylics, oil paintings, drawings, silkscreen prints and ink on aluminum.

Scope and Content

Series I. Exhibits and Events This series contains a large binder Gamboa put together consisting of copies of her event flyers, photos from events, and descriptions of exhibits from 1980-2011.
Series II. Gamboa's Comments on Her Works This series includes a spiral book containing Gamboa's edits and comments for artworks that are a part of the Self Help Graphics Archives and the Shifra Goldman Papers. These same comments are also typed and included in a binder format. A final edited spiral booklet of Gamboa's slides with updated comments have been printed and are included in the document box.
