transcribed from case: For most students, college is a time of dizzying personal
change, both confusing and exhilarating. Now a new film, "Seniors: Four Years in
Retrospect" prepares undergraduates to take full advantage of these invaluable years
of questioning and growth. The filmmakers of Frosh, the widely acclaimed chronicle of
one year in a racially diverse, freshman residence hall, returned to Stanford three
years later to see how college life had changed five of these students. * Monique,
daughter of a crack-addicted mother, gets help from several black women mentors,
graduates with honors and plans to go on for her Ph.D; * Cheng, an academically
driven, politically conservative Chinese American, drops pre-law for a high risk
career as a Singapore venture capitalist; * Sam, a white, male, heterosexual "jock,"
accepts increasing campus diversity but still seeks his own cultural enclave in the
world of sports and fraternities; * Brandi, an upper middle class African American
student, drops out for two years' experience in the "real world."; * Debbie, a white
pre-med major, switches to Women's Studies where she develops the self-confidence to
go on to med school

Recently observed change in Arctic temperatures and sea ice cover may be a harbinger
of global climate changes to come, according to a recent NASA study. Satellite
data--the unique view from space--are allowing researchers to more clearly see Arctic
changes and develop an improved understanding of the possible effect on climate
worldwide. The Arctic warming study, appearing in the November 1 issue of the American
Meteorological Society's Journal of Climate, shows that compared to the 1980s, most of
the Arctic warmed significantly over the last decade, with the biggest temperature
increases occurring over North America.

Weaving a biography of Theodore Roosevelt into his speech during Monday's 114th
Opening Convocation, President John Hennessy implored the 1,650 freshmen and 78
transfer students seated with their parents in the Main Quad to strive to emulate the
former U.S. president's many achievements and harbor an equally unquenchable thirst
for knowledge. Other speakers included John Bravman, vice provost for undergraduate
education, and Sung-Woo Cho, who graduates this year and served as head orientation
coordinator for the freshmen Class of 2008 and transfer students. Robin Mamlet, who
announced last month that she would be stepping down as dean of admission and
financial aid in June, was the first speaker. In what was her last convocation
address, Mamlet reminded the new students that they have been given a rare
opportunity.

Associate Professor of Mathematics Education Jo Boaler says when teachers at a Bay
Area urban high school created an innovative math curriculum designed to help all
students excel, the teens outperformed peers at two wealthier schools that followed
traditional math programs. The five-year study found that the disadvantaged students
liked math more and reached higher levels of math than the better-off high school
students. Despite this success, the urban students didn't do as well on state
multiple-choice exams, which Boaler says test knowledge of English as much as
mathematical ability. As a result, the reform-oriented program may have difficulty
expanding statewide, she says, because public education in California is driven by a
test-score system.

3/29/1999
Physical Description: 1
videotape(s) (vhs)
Scope and Contents note
Over the last four years, more than 400 Stanford women have been the victims of lewd,
harassing phone calls. The perpetrator: a man who called himself "Oscar." On March 29,
Stanford police arrested Simon Posada, 28, of San Mateo and charged him with 17 counts
of electronic eavesdropping and two counts of felony terroristic threats. Police
believe that the more than 400 phone-harassment reports they have on record are just
10 to 15 percent of the total number of calls Posada made since 1995. He apparently
culled information from students' web pages and kept it on computer disks at his
apartment, police say. The suspect has no Stanford affiliation.
