Hitzeman in San Francisco, California, of herring fishing activities at the Fort Mason Center and the First Annual McCovey Cove Regatta at China Basin. The collection has been processed to the File Unit level and is open for use.

Processing Note

Each photographic image has been assigned an Item number and each image has two physical forms (1 photographic print and 1 negative). Note that multiple images appear on the same negative film strip (there are 5 film strips total).
The Items in File Unit 2 have numbers 1-12 handwritten in pencil in the upper right corners. These numbers were likely added by the photographer and correspond to a list of photo descriptions on the Accession Receiving Report. The processing archivist kept the photographs in this original order, but assigned new Item numbers at the time of processing in June 2013.
The descriptions in this collection guide were compiled using the best available sources of information. Such sources include the creator's annotations or descriptions, collection accession files, primary and secondary source material and subject matter experts. SAFR-01623 was a gift from Judith M. Hitzeman on July 12, 2001. It was formally accessioned on July 16, 2001. The collection was accrued to P00-005 on June 12, 2013.

Historical or Biographical Note

Judith "Judy" M. Hitzeman (1953-) served as the Museum Curator (Registrar) at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park from 1990 until her retirement in December 2011. She was previously employed as a Museum Specialist (Registrar) at the Western Archeological and Conservation Center (1988-1990) and a Museum Technician (Curator) at the Fort Davis National Historical Site (1983-1988). She is married to John Conway, former shipwright at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.

Collection Scope and Content

The Judith M. Hitzeman photographs, 1991, 2001, (SAFR 23148, P00-005) are comprised of photographs taken by Judith M. Hitzeman in San Francisco, California, of herring fishing activities at the Fort Mason Center and the First Annual McCovey Cove Regatta at China Basin. The collection has been processed to the File Unit level and is open for use.
Contains photographs of fishing activities and the McCovey Cove Regatta in 1991 and 2001, respectively. There are 17 unique photographic images in 34 physical forms (17 color negatives and 17 color photographic prints).
Five photographs show TOMMY BOY (power fishing boat) and URSULA B. (power fishing boat) engaging in herring fishing activities between the piers at the Fort Mason Center in October or November 1991. Twelve photographs show activities at the First Annual McCovey Cove Regatta in China Basin on June 16, 2001. Among the traditional small craft that participated in the regatta are ALMA (built 1891; scow schooner), GAS LIGHT (built 1991; scow schooner), PHOENIX (built 1954; fireboat), and TELCO (built 1938; tugboat), as well as rowboats from the Dolphin Swimming & Boating Club.

Collection Arrangement

Arranged into two File Units: File Unit 1: Herring fishing at Fort Mason; File Unit 2: McCovey Cove Regatta. Within each File Unit, the photographs are arranged in numerical order by negative frame number.

Scope and Content Note

Items 06-17. Contains photographs of the First Annual McCovey Cove Regatta, an event sponsored by the San Francisco Giants baseball team and organized by the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park's (SAFR) Small Craft Department and the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association. Only traditional small craft were invited. The event took place in McCovey Cove, the unofficial name of the cove beyond the right field of the San Francisco Giants' ballpark, named after former player Willie McCovey. The official name of the cove is China Basin. Items 06-12 were photographed from the China Basin Park area, located across from the ballpark on the other side of Lefty O'Doul Bridge, showing the ballpark in the background. Items 13-17 were photographed from the walkway located outside the ballpark.
