Description
The collection documents the Junior Music Sponsors’ activities from 1954 to 2001, with the bulk of the collection dating from
1960 to 1997. Material includes photographs, scrapbooks, administrative and financial records, and lists of awarded scholarships.
Started in 1954 by music teacher Irene James and student Jean Kaufman, the group offered full and partial scholarships to
music camp for the most promising students. They also held summer music workshops at Arden school, and by 1957 formed a youth
symphony. In 1997, the Junior Music Sponsors merged with the Sacramento Youth Symphony. The Junior Music Sponsors dissolved
in 2001.
Background
The Junior Music Sponsors were founded in 1954 by music teacher Irene James and student Jean Kauffman. Through various fundraising
activities, the group offered full and partial scholarships to music camp for the most promising students. In 1957, the group
organized the Junior Music Orchestra. The Junior Music Sponsors merged with the Sacramento Youth Symphony in 1997, and the
Junior Music Sponsors dissolved in 2001.
