Huntington Lake was created in 1912 as part of the Big Creek hydroelectric power project in
the Sierra Nevada Mountains to provide power for a growing California. The first phase took
place from 1911 to 1914, and in addition to creating Huntington Lake, it included
construction of Big Creek Powerhouses No. 1 and No. 2. The lake was named for Henry Edwards
Huntington, president of the Pacific Light and Power Company, who financed the earliest work
at Big Creek. The Huntington Lake area grew into a recreational destination, with summer and
winter camps and vacationers.
An album of 100 commercially-made photographs, 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches each, of Huntington
Lake, in the High Sierras of California. The album does not have a title or any text, and is
undated. It appears to have been made in or shortly after 1915, as it features the
Huntington Lake Lodge, which opened in 1915. Views show the exterior, lobby and dining room.
Other subjects in the album are: children riding on burros, vacationers fishing and carrying
rifles for hunting, cabins, and views of the lake and mountain scenery. The new powerhouses,
dams, and railroad tracks are highlighted in several images. Photographs by Huddleston Photo
