Background

Scope and content:

Comprised of self-published books and digital images featuring familiar San Francisco buildings that have either disappeared or are soon to fall, as well as some survivors. Subjects include the San Francisco-Oakland Transbay Terminal, Candlestick Park, the Market/Van Ness intersection, Dogpatch, and the Market Street Masonry District.

Biographical / historical:

Arthur O'Donnell began documenting changing urban landscapes as a community radio reporter in New Jersey, Oregon, and Washington in the 1970s. He is an energy and business journalist and the author of several books. O'Donnell works at the California Public Utilities Commission as a supervisor of the Risk Assessment and Safety Advisory section.

Acquisition information:
Collection was donated to the library by Arthur O'Donnell beginning in June 2016. Additions were made until 2018.

The collection is open for research and available for use during San Francisco History Center hours. Photographs are available during Photo Desk hours. This collection must be requested at least 4 business days in advance of visit. Digital images are not yet available.
