The collection was gifted to the National Park Service, Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1984.

Historical or Biographical Note

Captain A.H. Sorensen was born in Denmark and began his seafaring career at age 6. He appeared in San Francisco around 1890 and worked from local ports for the remainder of his life until 1938. Employment on various vessels include the QUEEN (schooner), the IDA SNOW (schooner), the SNOW & BURGESS (built 1878; schooner, 5m), and the CALIFORNIA (built 1911; steam schooner), owned by the California Whaling Company, San Francisco, California. He drowned in the Alameda Estuary in 1938 where his body was found floating at the foot of Ninth Avenue. It is believed he lost his footing and fell into the water while boarding the BARBARA C. (schooner). He was employed as a night watchman on the lumber schooner BARBARA C. at the time.

The Captain A.H. Sorensen papers (SAFR 17608, HDC 37) is comprised of correspondence, letters of reference, newsclippings and other papers regarding the Captain's career from 1924 to 1938. The collection is processed and is open for use.
Documents of interest include a description of the SNOW & BURGESS (built 1878; schooner, 5m) dated June 12, 1903; 2 pages from the The Seaman's Journal with an article featuring the ROLPH (bark) dated June 15, 1921; descriptions of the C.A. THAYER, WAPAMA, ALMA and EUREKA when they were part of the San Francisco Maritime State Historic Park, and newsclippings relating to ships and the San Francisco Bay dating from 1954 to 1981.
