Scope and Content
Approximately 2,100 postcards, cabinet cards, "cartes-de-visite" and other albumen prints amassed by ethnographic 78 rpm disc
and photograph collector Benno Häupl. The collection is global in scope, featuring anonymous traditional musicians with their
instruments from all regions of the world, including Africa, Eurasia, North and South America, and Oceania. Particularly well
represented are photographs of bagpipers with regional varieties of bagpipes from countries such as Estonia, Armenia, Austria,
Russia, Macedonia, India, Serbia, Libya, Sudan and Portugal. The dates of these photographs range from 1860-1970. While the
bulk of the collection consists of postcards, it also includes cabinet cards, cartes-de-visite, unbacked albumen prints, stereoscopic
photographs, small albumen portraits and a daguerrotype, assorted modern photographic prints of record disc labels, record
disc collections and collectors, and a photographic print of the Martin Cayla storefront.
The collection also contains sound recording research files created by Häupl. Most of these files cover Country and Western
music, including numerical listings of Country and Western and banjo recordings, research files on Country, Cajun and Folk
recordings, correspondence (incoming), and programs.
Arrangement
The collection has been divided into two series: 1. Photographs and 2. Research files.
